Coober Pedy January 18, 2009

January 18, 2009

We spent the morning just looking around the shops at the different opal shops and checking out prices. The prices vary from shop to shop and also vary due to the color or lack of it. Have purchased of several unpolished rocks.

This afternoon I went on a four hour tour of the area around Coober Pedy and the opal fields. The opal fields encompass an area of fifty kilometers around the town. Most of the people live in houses that are partly underground although some people do live in homes above ground.

Seen the dog fence that goes across most of Australia and seen the area that once was an inland see. Also the area that is like a moon scape. Visited a Serbian Orthodox church that is completely underground. It is very beautiful in its starkness. Went underground to an old opal mine and a underground home. Then the guide gave a talk on opals and the different types. As it is the off season for tourists here I as privileged to a private tour.

If you are ever in Coober Pedy you have to have dinner at the Greek Resturant Called Tom and Marys Greek Taverna. The food is great and well priced.
