February 1, 2009 Sydney

Sure glad that I am not in the Melbourne and Adelaide areas, still blistering heat there and fires. Burned 28 homes and out buildings and it is still not under control. Started by a arsonist, and with the very hot weather and winds has turned into a very large fire, 400 fire fighters and 28 aircraft and other equipment working to try and put it out. They are hoping for cooler weather and possibly some rain but it does not look like they will get any for several days.

Today I bought a day pass for the transportation system in Sydney and early this morning hopped onto the train at Wolli Creek and went to Circular Quay and then caught the ferry to Taronga Zoo. When Jim and I were here a few years ago we went to the Zoo, so I was interested in seeing if it had improved or if there were any changes. There appears to have been no changes in the interval and at present there is a lot of construction going on. Some of the areas need to have a lot of improvement and hopefully that is what the construction is about.

Spent three hours walking around , the well marked paths, and enjoyed all the sites. The view from the zoo across to the city is spectacular. Had lunch at the food market. I have been trying to have a different type of food every time I eat. Today for lunch I had a Mongolian lamb dish - very good.

Then it was back on the ferry to Circular Quay and a walk around the Opera House. It being clear have taken some more photos of the Opera House because the when I was last down there it had been overcast and the photos were not so nice. Having taken dozens of photos, i stopped for coffee and then hopped back onto the train to Wolli Creek and then a short walk to the hotel.

Tomorrow have to be ready early for the trip to the Blue Mountains.

January 31, 2009

Dropped off the car at the airport this morning and Donna was off to Vancouver. I have not got anything planned for today - will wash out a few things and then see if I might get my hair cut. Have phoned Peter and Val and let them know that we have made it back to Sydney. Have to see where the train station is so that I can make my way to the zoo tomorrow. The trip to the Blue Mountains is Monday and they will pick me up at the hotel.

It certainly is not as hot here in Sydney and walking about is very pleasant, although I did not find it that bad when it way 35C.

January 29, 2009

Today we travelled a long way - the heat wave that has been around for the last six day will continue for a least a week or more. Some of the record temperatures in the past week have broken records from 100 years ago. Was 37C this morning when we left Mildura. The temperature sensor in the car was either 40 or 41 all the way to where we stopped at 6PM and it was 35C here when we arrived. Staying in Coulburn for the night and tomorrow will go into Sydney to stay overnight and then will return the car on Saturday and Donna will fly home . I am going to stay and will go to the Zoo, take a side trip to the blue mountains and then on Tuesday take the Train down to Mowra to see some relatives and stay there until Friday, when I will return to Sydney and Fly home on Saturday. Have to try and change my flight but knowing Air Canada it may not be possible but will give it a try.
